Gabriella is a marine conservationist with a Masters in Biodiversity Conservation and Management from the University of Oxford. Gabriella’s work has won her the BBC Global Youth Champion award 2021.

 

After meeting a community of women seaweed harvesters in the Gulf of Mannar in Tamil Nadu, Gabriella was inspired by their unique understanding of the seaweed ecosystems in the region and their women-run seaweed business which was three generations old.

 

This led her to study the larger seaweed industry in India and understand its challenges such as the low incomes of harvesters, the lack of safety and ecological guidelines for harvesting seaweed. On the basis of this research Gabriella started The Good Ocean in 2022.

She has spent the last 5 years working exclusively on seaweed in India, prior to which she worked on coral reef conservation projects and cetacean monitoring with the WWF India office.
